Tina Turns 23 in Cambodia Day 5

MONDAY, FEBRUARY 1, 2016

Oh God. I’m 23 today. I don’t physically feel old, but seeing the number 23 makes me feel old, or at least I’m getting up there.  Wow, that and I’m definitely in the “I have to be an adult” phase.

Before coming to Cambodia and Thailand, we booked a ziplining course for $104 USD per person with Flight of the Gibbon. They picked us up early at our hostel, so not much time to spare for breakfast. They had water, lockers to keep your stuff in, and gave safety instructions (#legsup).  This company is professional.  They brought with them a first aid kit, which Tory got some use out of, and I think in the back of my mind, I knew I was safe.

I’m not really into extreme sports.  I am also not an adrenaline junkie.  In fact, I’m a super scaredy cat.  I don’t do well on anything that has motion involved.  I don’t do heights either.  Last time I went zip lining was four years ago in Las Vegas.  I basically cried all the way up there, super scared. Yes, I’m a big baby when it comes to things I’m afraid of.

So why do something I’m scared of?  Well, I remember I had a blast zip lining in Vegas. The initial drop was scary as hell, but afterwards it was exciting and fun.  I wasn’t sure how I was going to fare on this zip lining course in Cambodia.  Lately, I been trying to overcome some of those fears of mine. No regrets.  I wanted to challenge myself and I knew that doing things that I was scared of would help me grow as a person. It helped that I have friends in both situations who wouldn’t let me back down.

By the 3rd course, I was okay.  I was having fun, and the anxiety went down a bit. Honestly, it was an amazing day.  I never would have thought that I would spending my birthday zip lining over the jungles in Cambodia.  What just happened?!

After two hours zip lining, the experience included a lunch after that was preset by Flight of the Gibbon.  After lunch, they dropped us off at our hostel and we all took naps, or if you’re Tracy, you wait for your friends to wake up from their naps.

Tracy and I headed back out around late afternoon and booked us a dinner show, where we could watch traditional Cambodian dances. Then we celebrated some more with birthday smoothies 🙂

Tracy and I then got sketchy manicures and pedicures. They were only $3 USD so we thought why not.  I don’t think the color I picked on the stencil fully matched the color they actually gave me.  Also, their clear top coat, was not clear in the bottle.  Let’s just say the value matched the product.  The people there were very nice, it just wasn’t the best pedicure I’ve had.

Then we met up with Rebecca and Tory for a pre dinner snack and a 30 min massage and then grabbed a tuk tuk to the dinner show.  The guy was nice and said that he would pick us up after the show too.  That certainly saves us time from having to hunt down transportation, but I have a feeling it meant more to him to have our business.

Nachos at a bar near pub street.

The dinner was lovely.  Seating was not great and could be a better, but we made do.  The food was delicious and the dances were very cultural.  I loved their outfits and dresses.  I definitely recommend seeing the dances if you’re ever in Cambodia. From what I recall, it was $16 USD per person for dinner and show.)

Apsara is probably the most famous type of Cambodian dances. The Apsara dance was performed at offering ceremonies and palace celebrations. Apsaras were depicted as heavenly dancers, half woman half goddess. Their circular movements, poised motions and lightness of their gestures tell a story of nature and symbolize their hovering between heaven and earth.

After the show and dinner, we headed back to our hostel and I took a shower.  Coming out, I went back to the room to be surprised by the girls.  They had bought these little cakes for me and sang happy birthday for me.  Tracy even downloaded a candle app that I could “blow out.”  It was very nice of them and I appreciate them making the day special for me.

Another early night for me, because Tracy and I are going to catch the sunrise at Angkor Wat tomorrow.  Wake up at 4:30am? Fun! #not
