Hello Kaohsiung!

FRIDAY, DECEMBER 26, 2015

I’m super behind on my posts. Hopefully I remember everything. Okay, so Christmas has just passed and I invited myself to Kaohsiung with Tracy and Josh. The main attraction we went for was monkey mountain (Shoushan).  Tracy has been before, but this was my first time and I was super excited.  I don’t get the opportunity to go to the southern part of Taiwan a lot so it’s always exciting when I do go.

I did take a half day off work and left after lunch on Friday.  It was rainy and cold in Miaoli.  I couldn’t wait to go south, where it’s hopefully a little warmer.  I took the High Speed Rail at 12:45pm and arrived at Zuoying Station at 2:18.

Tracy and Josh had not arrived so I had a little time to kill.  I went to the tourist information booth and collected some pamphlets on things happening in the area.  While I was waiting, I bought myself a metro card for the subway in Kaohsiung. You can buy them at 7-Eleven or at a KMRT station at the information booth.  I have an Easycard, but Kaohsiung has their own subway card for buses and subway rides.  The iPass card itself was 100NTD and then I added 100NTD to the card.  For one and a half days in Kaohsiung, I wasn’t expecting to use a lot of it.

While I was waiting, there was a flash mob-like performance.  These were legit dancers though.  It seemed like maybe the girls were all part of a dance company and this public performance was part of a marketing strategy.  They all wore costumes and performed quite lovely actually.  It was enjoyable and another reminder of Christmas.

Soon after Tracy and Josh finally arrived.  Tracy had booked our hostel at the same place she stayed last time.  We went to the hostel to drop off our stuff and just ended up walking around that afternoon at the pier 2 Art Center.

We just walked around and ate dinner along way at some local restaurant.  We ate dumplings and noodles and it came out to be 80 NT per person.

I forgot to take a picture before, but this is the after picture.

We continued to walk around and we somehow reached Liuhe night market.  This blog has some really good information about the night market, including what to eat and how to get there. I ended up buying a Taiwan flag pin, a selfie stick, and ate a bunch of food.  For the selfie stick…. they were selling it for 100 NTD per stick.  Josh was going to buy one and I was also interested.  I asked the owner if he could give us a discount if we bought two.  He said 2 for 150.  Sweet! I was very proud of my bargaining skills.  Anyways, the night market has good food and good souvenirs if you’re looking.  The best way to get the most from the food stalls is to go with somebody.  That way you guys can split everything and try more.

I’m eating toast with some sort of meat making it a salty dish.

After the night market, we hopped on the KMRT at Formosa Boulevard.  Definitely check out the station while you’re there.  I was told it was ranked one of the most beautiful subway stations (in Taiwan?).  You might be able to find it under the name, “Dome of Light” as well.  From there, we went back to the hostel to get ready for an exciting day tomorrow!
